The Department of Political Science was established in the year 1942-43 along with the establishment of the college itself. The department started its journey initially by offering I.A (Intermediate in Arts) in Civics. The first teacher appointed was Satyendra Kumar Dey. The honours course was introduced in 1960-61 session in the Department.  In keeping with the UGC guidelines and requirements, the Dept has introduced a new syllabus that contains B.A. Honours Course and B.A. Programme Course under the Choice Based Credit System or CBCS from July 2018. This offers students a greater measure of choice and scope to concentrate on and pursue areas that interest them. Right now, the department has four (04) full-time Teachers and two (02) State Aided College Teachers (SACT).

In addition to the traditional chalk and talk method classes, virtual classes, special interactive classes by applying group discussion, question-answer, and demonstration methods are arranged to encourage the students and thereby improve their learning. In-house discussion, debate, lecture sessions, library orientation programmes, unit tests, seminars frequently organised by the department help the students acquire knowledge, skill and self-confidence. The hidden creativity of the students is manifested through the publication of Wall Magazines.

Students are encouraged to take part in various social and NSS activities. Departmental freshers’ welcome, annual sports, annual award ceremony, debate, extempore, youth parliament competitions participation are held to promote the sense of political culture and to inculcate democratic values among the students.
